Answers to frequently asked questions about this spraybooth and its available options.
A smart repair bay is a dedicated area designed for small, localised cosmetic repairs, such as bumper corners, scuffs, minor panel damage, and spot refinishing. It is intended for controlled, low-volume paint application rather than full vehicle or full-panel resprays.
A smart repair bay is designed for localised repair work with lower containment levels than a full spraybooth. Full spraybooths are engineered for complete panels and vehicles, whereas smart repair bays focus on speed, efficiency, and small-area repairs.
No. Smart repair bays are not intended for full-panel painting. Guidance from the Health and Safety Executive states that SMART repair activities should be limited to small, localised areas only. Full-panel or full-vehicle spraying must be carried out in a suitably designed spraybooth with adequate airflow and control measures.
This is set out in HSE guidance INDG473 – Safety in SMART repair, available from the HSE at:
https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg473.pdf
STL designs smart repair bays in line with this guidance to support safe, compliant operation and avoid misuse of the repair area.
A smart repair bay typically includes filtered extraction, appropriate lighting, compressed air and power supplies, and space for smart repair tools and materials. Equipment selection is tailored to the repair scope and compliance requirements.
Yes. By separating small cosmetic repairs from full paint operations, a smart repair bay helps reduce spraybooth bottlenecks, improve workflow, and increase overall repair throughput. Using a smart repair bay for appropriate repairs also uses significantly less energy than operating a full-size spraybooth, helping reduce running costs while maintaining safe and compliant working practices.
